Assessing the impact of children’s books in community libraries

Author(s): Ahhana Verma

Abstract: This research paper, "Assessing the Impact of Children’s Books in Community Libraries," explores the significant role that children's literature in community libraries plays in fostering social inclusion and justice in urban environments, particularly among marginalized communities.Utilizing a qualitative approach, the study focuses on two non-profit community libraries in New Delhi, India, to examine how children's books can act as tools for social change. The methodology involves a combination of participant observations, interviews with librarians and community members, and analysis of library records. This multi-faceted approach provides insights into the ways in which these libraries select, display, and utilize children’s books to engage young readers. Key findings indicate that children’s literature in these libraries serves not just as a medium for literacy, but also as a powerful instrument for social and cultural education. The libraries use storytelling and book discussions as platforms to address complex social issues relevant to the children's communities, thereby promoting empathy and understanding. Another key finding is the salience of illustrated children’s books, or picture books, as a heavily-relied-on medium and tool used to bridge verbal gaps and language barriers. The paper concludes by discussing the broader implications of these findings, suggesting that children's books in community libraries play a vital role in nurturing informed, empathetic future citizens. It underscores the importance of strategic selection and use of children’s literature to advance social justice and highlights the need for further research in diverse socio-cultural contexts.
