Abstract: Literacy is an ongoing challenge throughout the world. Due to this need, there is a wide range of methodologies, systems and materials that have been used. There is also a lack of these resources globally due to various challenges of language and socioeconomic need. In language acquisition, there is order to the progression of language that begins with listening, emerges into speaking, then culminates with writing and reading. The ongoing expression of timeline for individuals to acquire full functional fluency in reading is typically five to seven years, whether that be in a first or second language acquisition model of instruction. While most solutions to this problem focus upon better materials, methodologies or systems, very few systems look at the ability to reduce the timeline of years that it takes to garner success in academic reading fluency. A model called yours (Yearlong ODBM Unique Reading System), developed by Our Daily Bread Ministries, attempts to achieve a model of instruction that is faster than the well-established timeline. If effective, this model will influence the scope of materials needed, facilitation times, and in turn, monetary resources, which may change the landscape of literacy instruction. This study analyzed the effectiveness of the yours system for two samples of students in Tanzania to see if they could progress through the stages of literacy instruction in a pace for obtaining academic fluency in less than one year.
