A study on smartphone addiction and its relationship with academic performance among higher secondary school students in Balasore District

Author(s): Prakash Chandra Adi, Namita Behera and Chandrasekhar Bhoi

Abstract: The Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS-VAM) developed by Vijayashri and Masaud Ansari was used as the primary tool for data collection. Statistical techniques such as mean, standard deviation, t-test, and Pearson's product-moment correlation were applied for analysis. The findings revealed that a majority of students (76.5%) exhibited moderate levels of smartphone addiction. Female students, urban residents, and private school students showed significantly higher levels of addiction compared to their counterparts. However, the academic performance of most students was average, and the correlation between smartphone addiction and academic achievement was found to be weak and statistically insignificant. The study concludes that while smartphone addiction is prevalent, its direct impact on academic achievement is not strong enough to draw definitive conclusions. It emphasizes the need for awareness programs and balanced smartphone usage policies among students to optimize both learning outcomes and digital well-being.
