Impact of academic stress on higher secondary level students: An empirical study

Abstract: Stress is a state of an Individual underrnexhausting circumstances in different areas of life. Students specially ofrnsecondary classes have to undergo the pressure of studies, expectation, ofrnparents, teachers and self, peer pressure, career demands resulting a lot ofrnburden on delicate mind, therefore it is necessary to understand the causes ofrnacademic stress among students; to point out their resources to combat it andrnthereby enhance their well-being. Stress has become an important topic inrnacademic circles. Academic stress refers to a mental feeling of uneasiness orrndistress in reaction to a school situation or environment which is perceivedrnnegatively. In today’s highly competitive world, students face various academicrnproblems including exam stress, disinterest in attending classes and inabilityrnto understand the subject. Examination stress is the feeling of anxiety orrnapprehensive over one’s performance in the exams. It can lead to students beingrnunable to perform to the best of their abilities in exam. Academic stress isrnthe major sources of stress among adolescents and it may lead to lowrnself-esteem. Many psychological problems such as depression and suicide occurrnas a result of low self-esteem Therefore we can say that academic stress seemsrnto be one of the important and significant factors that likely to influencernonce career in life starting from the beginning of schooling. This paper hasrntried to through light on how academic stress has an impact on higher secondaryrnlevel students.
