Sociology of education in Nigerian universities: Trends and modern approach

Abstract: This paper examined the trends and modern approaches to sociology of education. These modern approaches and trends in the sociology of education highlights the field’s ongoing efforts to critically examine and improve educational systems, making them more inclusive, equitable, and effective for all students. The paper adopted a qualitative method, as it relied on secondary sources for data collection and analysis. The study also discoursed the concept of sociology of education, the theoretical context of sociology of education, methods of sociology of education, emerging issues and current trends of sociology of education, among others. Finally, some suggestions were made on how to keep abreast with current trends and approaches in sociology of education in Nigerian universities. Among others were: there should be a regular review and update of the curriculum to reflect societal needs and trends; government should provide regular training and workshops for lecturers to improve their teaching skills.
