An action research proposal on effectiveness of communicative language teaching in english education

Author(s): Pyarelal Singh and Kajal Samar Siddiqi

Abstract: This study examines the efficacy of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in improving English language teaching, specifically developing learners' communicative competence, fluency, and interest. With conventional grammar-oriented methods lacking in fostering authentic uses of language, CLT has surfaced as a student-centered method of teaching that prioritizes interaction, context-based usage, and functional communication. This research examines the current literature, undertakes empirical research by observing classes and surveying students, and reports comparisons of results between CLT and traditional pedagogy. The results indicate that CLT has a striking impact on improving learners' oral skills, enhancing motivation, and building confidence in using language. Its effective delivery is, however, encumbered by teacher readiness, curriculum limitations, and the availability of resources. The study emphasizes the need for teacher education, curriculum planning, and supportive infrastructure to ensure the optimal gains of CLT in English teaching. The findings provide useful insights for teachers, policymakers, and curriculum planners seeking to improve English language teaching in various educational settings.
