Deepfakes and legal accountability: Regulating synthetic media in the digital age

Author(s): Prashant Kumar Gangwar and Sonal Singh

Abstract: Deepfake technology, powered by artificial intelligence, has revolutionized digital media but also poses significant legal, ethical, and security challenges. This paper examines the legal accountability of deepfake creators, platforms, and users, analyzing global legislative responses, intellectual property concerns, privacy violations, and national security risks. It explores technological solutions such as AI-based detection, blockchain authentication, and regulatory frameworks across jurisdictions like the USA, EU, India, and China. By balancing freedom of expression with deepfake regulation, this study provides recommendations for legal reforms, international cooperation, and public awareness initiatives to mitigate deepfake-related harms.
